Keres-Speaking Building Substitute

Reports to the Head of School and Administrator.

Hours: 7:30 am–3:30 pm

Background:
The Keres Children’s Learning Center (KCLC) is located on Pueblo de Cochiti Reservation along the Rio Grande River between Santa Fe and Albuquerque, New Mexico. KCLC is a private, independent school that uses the Montessori Method and the Keres Language to serve Cochiti children and their families in revitalizing their Keres language and in preparing the next generation of Cochiti people, equally grounded in Indigenous and mainstream education. The Infant-Toddler and Primary settings use Keres Immersion; the Elementary and Adolescent settings use Keres-English dual language best practices. KCLC’s mission is to reclaim our children’s education and honor our heritage by using a comprehensive cultural and academic curriculum to assist families in nurturing Keres-speaking, holistically healthy, community minded, and academically strong students.

Position Summary:
This is a full-time Keres-speaking teaching position as the daily substitute, potentially subbing in any setting (Infant-Toddler to Adolescent) or anyplace else as needed (e.g. kitchen).

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Follows provided lesson plans and established daily routines
  • Maintains children’s safety, discipline, and engagement in the classroom and outside
  • Works with teaching staff to provide consistency and continuity for children
  • With children, cleans classroom environment for next school day
  • Records observations of children on teacher-provided lesson plans
  • Records observations of children’s Keres language on Language Observation Log.
  • Is patient and respectful of children and their families
  • Communicates with classroom teachers about the lessons, lesson plans, children, and overall progress of the day.


Skills/Knowledge/Abilities:

  • Speaks Keres at all times with children.
  • Speaks Keres to the best of their ability with other Keres-speaking adults.
  • Manages a safe classroom in accordance with Montessori and Cochiti values.
  • Uses basic classroom management techniques aligned with Montessori pedagogy.
  • Communicates clearly in writing and verbally.
  • Is patient and respectful of children and their families.
  • Honors confidentiality.


Keres Children’s Learning Center (KCLC) Keres-Speaking Building Substitute Job Description:

Work Environment:
This is an 8-hour daily/40-hours per week position with occasional overtime expected on occasions such as field trips. Schedule is unpredictable as it changes depending on the classroom or setting assigned to, which can be different on a daily or even hourly basis. Arrangements will be made to assure a daily 30- minute duty-free break. The classroom setting and therefore the work environment is designed in service to the children’s needs; this is characterized by frequent interruptions and schedule changes. Substitute follows lesson plans provided by the teacher and provides a daily written report to teacher about the day. If, on occasion, not assigned to sub in a classroom, alternate work will be given, possibly including administrative paperwork or materials making.

Physical Demands:
This position includes daily outdoor nature walks and recess duty, in all weather. Substitute must be able to move quickly to keep up with and monitor children’s safety outdoors and indoors, pick up children weighing up to 40 pounds, as well as be able to see and hear children from a distance. It is necessary in some settings to give lessons on the floor or in other non-classroom settings.

Other:

  • Travel locally on field trips with children; may be asked to transport children in personal vehicle.
  • Travel to attend conferences periodically is required.
  • Substitute will come to work on time and be mindful of absences so as to minimize their effect on children.

  • Substitute will fulfill duties according to rotating schedule as well as other duties as assigned.
  • Substitute will possess a valid driver’s license and vehicle.
  • Substitute will successfully undergo background check.
  • Substitute will take initiative to serve KCLC’s mission.
