Dual Language Education
At KCLC, our Elementary classroom (6-12-year-olds) is a dual-language education setting. The Elementary is a continuation of language immersion from the primary classroom, but in Elementary, the children get 50% of their instruction through Keres and 50% of their instruction through English, called a 50/50 model. (Please see Thomas and Collier, The Astounding Effectiveness of Dual Language Education for All.
We use our Keres Language and Culture teachers and our Keres Speaking Elementary guide to deliver Keres and teach all subjects throughout the Elementary child’s day. One of the strengths of the Montessori classroom is that there is room for any language to be used. Montessori settings are very language-immersion friendly and allow for Keres language usage in all ways language is used—in relationship, traditional practices, social, formal, informal, playful, and academic.
